Zakat questions, answered.

How is Zakat calculated?

Add up your zakatable wealth (cash, bank balances, gold, silver, investments such as mutual fund units and shares, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to receive), subtract debts that are due now, and if the total is at or above the nisab and has been held for a lunar year, Zakat is 2.5% of it.

What is the nisab for Zakat in Pakistan?

Nisab is the minimum wealth on which Zakat is due: the value of 7.5 tola (87.48 grams) of gold or 52.5 tola (612.36 grams) of silver. Because silver is much cheaper, the silver nisab is far lower, and many scholars recommend it as the more cautious choice for cash and mixed wealth. Enter today’s per-tola rates to calculate the threshold.

Is Zakat due on mutual fund investments?

Most scholars treat mutual fund units as zakatable wealth. A common approach is to pay 2.5% of their current market value (units × NAV) on your Zakat date. Some scholars allow paying only on the zakatable share of the fund’s assets. Ask a scholar which approach you should follow.

Is Zakat deducted automatically from mutual funds in Pakistan?

For Muslim Pakistani citizens, Zakat may be deducted at source from savings accounts and some investments, including mutual funds, under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance, for example on 1 Ramadan or on redemption, depending on the account. You can submit a Zakat exemption declaration (CZ-50) to your bank or asset manager if you prefer to pay Zakat yourself. If Zakat was deducted at source, you can subtract it from what you owe.

Is Zakat due on gold jewellery?

Scholars differ: the Hanafi school, followed by most Muslims in Pakistan, considers gold and silver jewellery zakatable, while other schools exempt jewellery in regular personal use. Include or leave out your jewellery accordingly.

Does this calculator give a religious ruling?

No. It applies the common method so you can estimate your Zakat. For personal circumstances, such as long-term debts, business assets or a pension, ask a qualified scholar.
