An asset management company is a firm licensed by the SECP to manage mutual funds. It invests the fund’s money according to the offering document, publishes the NAV daily and handles investments and redemptions. Each fund’s assets are held separately by a trustee, such as the Central Depository Company, not by the AMC itself.
24 asset managers offer Shariah-compliant funds in MUFAP data, 331 funds in all. The largest ranges by number of Islamic funds are Al Meezan (55), Faysal (44), NBP (27). Fund count is not the same as size: it includes fixed-term plans and pension sub-funds.
Start with the type of fund that fits your goal, then compare funds of that type across managers on total return with payouts over several periods, fees and sales loads, and how easy it is to invest and redeem. The best Islamic mutual funds rankings and the comparison tool help with the first part.
Mutual fund assets are held by an independent trustee in the fund’s name, separate from the AMC’s own balance sheet, and AMCs are regulated by the SECP. This protects against the manager’s own insolvency, but not against market losses: the value of your units can still go down.
