Questions, answered

Mutual fund payouts and dividends, explained.

What is a mutual fund payout or dividend?

A payout (also called a dividend or cash distribution) is income a mutual fund distributes to its unit holders, usually from profits it has earned. In Pakistan, payouts are announced per unit in rupees. Investors can typically receive the payout in cash or reinvest it as additional units.

What does payout per unit mean?

It is the cash amount, in PKR, paid for each unit you hold. For example, a payout of Rs 1.50 per unit on 1,000 units is Rs 1,500 before any applicable tax. It is not a percentage return.

What is ex-distribution NAV?

The ex-distribution (ex-dividend) NAV is the fund’s unit price after the payout is deducted. Because the cash leaves the fund, the NAV falls by roughly the payout amount. That is why NAV alone understates a fund’s return, and why our return figures include payouts.

Why does my fund’s NAV drop after a payout?

A payout moves money from the fund to investors. Your total wealth stays about the same at that moment: a lower NAV plus the cash or extra units you received. Over time, total return (NAV change plus payouts) is the fairer measure of performance.

How often do Islamic funds pay dividends?

It depends on the fund. Money market and income funds often distribute monthly, quarterly or even daily, while equity funds usually distribute annually, if at all. Use the filters above to see the payout history of any fund.

Is the payout history complete?

We show payouts reported in MUFAP data. Coverage for some older periods or funds may be incomplete, and a missing record does not mean the fund paid nothing. Confirm with the asset management company when the details matter.
